Styling Basics

When it comes down to it, you probably have more basic items in your closet than anything else. It’s true; we all end up spending more money on the plain and simple clothing pieces because lets face it, we’ll wear them more and they’ll last us eternally… most likely. Yet, styling basics is always somewhat tough. As much as you want to walk out of the house in a pair of Aritzia tights and a long Forever 21 sweater paired with Nike Free Runs… don’t do it! (Unless you’ve counted and styled yourself using the ten point rule. Click Here to view the ten point rule theory.)

How are basics meant to be styled? Well here’s a look at how I styled two of my favourite basic items. I’ve paired my $19.99 cargo basic baggy pants with a $3.99 basic crop top. When styling two basic items together you have to remember to add as much details as you can, that is without looking too overdone. Shoes are always the hardest to choose. Because my outfit consisted of two basics, I decided to add more of a “wow” look to the outfit by wearing high booties. (Any pair of light coloured heels would work). As for jewelry: I wore a gold watch, and a short nude necklace. The nude necklace suited my top well giving it a collar look, which made my top look more chic. You can always add layers of necklaces to basic tops— it definitely makes the top and yourself stand out more. Additional accessories added to my outfit were my sunglasses and my nude clutch. Using the ten point theory, my outfit consisted of a total of 14 points. (Remember, this includes piercings.) Complete outfit details are listed below.

Sunglasses by Coach, Necklace was a vintage find, Watch by Aldo, and Clutch from Chapters, Indigo. (My clutch was a 3 way attached purse that can be used as a single clutch/long purse.)
